Start with the question. Then read the whole section.

A simple reading method

1. Find the relevant provision. Search an offence name or a BNS section number. IPC and BNS numbers are not interchangeable.
2. Identify the ingredients. Read who, what conduct, and what intention or knowledge the section requires.
3. Check the qualifications. Subsections, explanations, exceptions and provisos can change the result. Do not stop at the heading.
4. Separate punishment from procedure. The BNS describes offences and punishments. The BNSS supplies procedural rules and offence classifications.
5. Check the source and applicable date. An enacted provision and an in-force provision are not necessarily the same. Historical conduct may raise separate applicability questions.
